Making an effort to fight against the rise of phishing attacks on consumers, McAfee has released an update to their spam prevention software and personal firewall services.
On Tuesday, McAfee released their new version of SpamKiller. Its multilayered filtering engine was developed to keep inboxes unsolicited email free, including those used in phishing scams. The filter was built based on the Bayesian technology, which can learn what types of emails to block automatically. It can also locate codes hidden inside e-mail images that are used to evade antispam engines.
"It is well reported that more than 90 percent of all phishing attacks happened within the last year alone, which tells us that home users need to be more educated and aware of what these scams are and how they can protect themselves and their families against this growing threat," Bill Kerrigan, senior vice president at McAfee.
Nearly 2 million Americans have given personal information to fraudulent sites, according to McAffe. Of those, 1 million more may have fallen victim to phishing scams without even knowing it.
JPEG Image Flaw Has Been Exploited. EasyNews, a provider of Usenet newsgroups, said that it had found two JPEG images that take advantage of a previously identified flaw in the way that Microsoft software handles image files.
The Trojan horse images may not be as threatening as a more sophisticated version of the exploit could be.
"These JPEGs did not replicate, so this is not a virus," antivirus software company F-Secure stated in its Weblog. "Apparently they tried to use these JPEGs to download Trojan (horse programs) to vulnerable computers, but the download sites should be down by now."
This issue doesn’t affect non-Microsoft operating systems such as Linux and Mac OS X.
